I was listening to Rob Bell interview Josh Radnor, a decently famous actor, and he talked about the difference in living for your resume versus your eulogy. WOW, I thought. That’s an EXCELLENT way to think about things. It’s SO easy to live a resume life, where we strive, achieve, compete, earn, buy, succeed, and make ourselves out to be bigger and better than others. It seems to me that’s what our society teaches us to do. It says life is a game and the aim is to win. YET, my friends, there is another way, the eulogy way of life.
What matters in a eulogy? Relationship, connection, compassion, giving, embracing, kindness, courage, encouragement, helping, and above all love. It seems to me eulogies talk about how we affected others and the world for the better. Nobody really cares about resume virtues when it comes to remembering our lives. With that in mind, and affirming that our resume type activity DO matter and have their place, I invite us to practice living eulogy lives. Think and embody love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
