Crying Our Way to Life

I taught 3 classes in a row where someone cried at the end. What a gift and inspiration!!! You see yoga is a practice of becoming more human and alive, and tears are a sacred and important part of what it means to be fully human. FAR from the cultural conditioning that says waterworks are weakness and womanly, I’m convinced they’re courageous, powerful, and 100% for ALL people! Emotions aren’t an accessory to experiencing aliveness, they’re a necessity.

Yoga is medicine, and one of it’s gifts is clearing away the messages we get to suppress, ignore, shove down, or be afraid of our emotional intelligence. While the myth is when we let ourselves feel powerful and negative emotions we will lose ourselves in the feeling, the truth is when we don’t allow these energies to be felt and expressed, we become less alive and human. A trick is to remember we HAVE emotions, but are not our emotions.

Think of sadness, surprise, anger, joy, and so on as food on a plate, to feel them is like eating the meal and washing the plate, while to ignore them is to both starve, and let the food rot and stink up the place (i.e. you)! The most alive, kind, and compassionate person I know is my wife Lisa. I don’t think it’s a coincidence she also cries more than anyone I know. So, here’s to being more like Lisa and feeling ALL the feels!!!
