At perhaps the lowest point in my life, when I was feeling unloved, unlovable, and unloving, want to know the “odd” thing that made a BIG difference in flipping the script? Heart-openers! Poses in yoga that expand one’s heart-center, and hence one’s love. While that might seem woo-woo, the fabulous thing is studies are showing it’s literally true! Dr. Amy Cuddy says: “Our bodies change our minds, and our minds change our behavior, and our behavior changes the outcome.”
Turns out, the old saying, “fake it until you make it” in this way, is true! The poses, expressions, and stances, chosen or unchosen, powerfully “train” us on how to be and act in the world. As a yoga teacher and student/practitioner of Love, I both find this fabulous, and experientially feel it to be true. On that note, I’ve recently realized I struggle when it comes to confidence, so have been working on growing that “muscle”. Ironically, my wife pointed out I don’t often make eye contact, which I immediately knew was both true, and related to my lack of assurance. Want to guess what’s helping change that narrative? Standing, posing, and BREATHING confidence. I’ve got a way to go, but can already feel the shifts.
I’m curious, what trait do you want to grow? What poses, stances, movements, and/or mentalities embody that, and could help you move that direction? I mention “mentality”, because the spirit and intention we put into something, deeply informs what we get out of it. I find standing confidently, “posing” with my chest and face lifted, leaning toward someone, really hugging someone, smiling in the face of challenge, and so on, make a world of difference when it comes to my self-confidence. So, with that in mind I invite us to: Embody and breathe it, until you believe and become it!
