My heart is in knots. My eyes are faucets. My spirit is heavy, and soul shakes. Another school shooting? More mass shootings than days in the year so far? America, please stop killing children, as well as murdering or terrorizing SO many people who are “different” racially, religiously, mentally, sexually, financially, and so on. We need to admit we have a problem, and finally do something about it!
We are in the midst of a serious mental health pandemic. While this is true across the board, our youth—in particular—are being affected by this at a jaw-dropping rate. Combine this with America’s gun addiction, and is it any wonder there have been 27 school and 212 mass shootings so far in 2022?
Heaven, we have a problem!
I know the Constitution guarantees the “right to bear arms”. Yet, it also said black slaves only counted as three-fifths of a person. What is more, the arms amendment was for the purpose of maintaining a militia to defend our country, something we haven’t needed in quite some time with a professional military and law enforcement. Don’t get it twisted, while I am practitioner of Love—and the non-violence it calls us to—I’m just pointing these things out. In other words, while there being more privately owned guns in the U.S. than people, indicates an unhealthy obsession, I am not saying we should just outlaw them. Instead, I am I am saying there is a deeper issue at root. One that can be summed up thusly:
Our hearts have gone estray. We’ve forgotten the most important thing is to love and care for one another.
When we return to, focus on, and rest in lovingkindness, mental health and guns will take care of themselves. And, in the meantime, to paraphrase my professor Ken’s wife: It’s vital for us to build fences to protect where our hearts have not yet grown.
We can do better. We MUST do better. Speak up. Take action. Love!
Hugs & Love,
